Harbor Index

2026 · Docklands Oral History Trust · Lead designer-engineer

A public archive of waterfront oral histories. Searchable, cited, and built so an editor can add a tape without calling anyone.

001 / The pile

Forty years of cassette interviews lived in a shared drive, a FileMaker file nobody could open, and a volunteer spreadsheet. The Trust wanted a public archive. What they had was a pile.

002 / The document

I modelled the collection as recordings, people, places, and vessels — not as blog posts with tags. Each tape has a transcript, a timestamped index, and a citation that actually resolves. The Studio is a cataloguing desk: accession number, rights, speakers, related vessels. The public site is a document, not a mosaic of cards.

003 / After

Two hundred and eighteen recordings published in the first season. Volunteers catalogue new tapes without a developer. Researchers cite specific minutes. The homepage is a finding aid, not a hero video.
