Field Atlas

2025 · Ash & Bracken Conservancy · Systems & front-end

A research CMS for a conservation nonprofit. Plots, species, field notes — structured so scientists can write and the public can read.

A conservation field desk with map, compass, and cloth notebook in a misty forest.

001 / The pile

Field notes lived in Notion, species lists in a Google Sheet, and the public site was a brochure last updated during a grant cycle. Nothing linked.

002 / The document

One content graph: sites, plots, taxa, observations, people. A map that is a view of the same records, not a separate GIS toy. Drafts stay drafts. Published notes get a stable URL and a citation. The Studio has the fields scientists actually fill in, in the order they fill them.

003 / After

The public atlas launched with twelve sites and a season of notes. Interns can publish. The old brochure is gone. Researchers stopped emailing PDFs.
